Re: What Are Your Favourite Aviation Sounds

A few of my memorable favorates. The Shack(Think Louis v Wyk flying) at D.F.Malan on its last flypast when they were de-commissioned. 55 Harvards doing a formo shut-down at Langenaanweg, farewell to the Spammies. any L-model Puma doing a shoot-up, a Zuka taxiing at Ondangs when your turn going home.Alo doing top-cover met die "besem" wat uitsteek.

Sadly, there aren`t many clips that do the "blue note" justice....I think you really have to be there to get the full goosebumps effect, but here`s one:

Re: What Are Your Favourite Aviation Sounds

I loved the sound of the old Turmo engine fitted to the 330 Puma "blaffing" herself into life.
Love the sound of a Arriel 2b1 here at 25% N1 when she surges warning you to let her go as she means business.
Then there is the thundering feeling in your chest just before you here the beautiful sound of a Oryx approaching low level.
Last one is a heavy EC130 fenestron whilst taking take off power.

Oh ja - forgot to mention (for the jet jocks), three mirages taking off from Ondangs and going supersonic overhead Oshakati, me and my mates waited on top of the bomb shelter at 310FACP, as we knew the planned flight profile......BANG

Re: What Are Your Favourite Aviation Sounds

hmmm.... interesting thread, here's my choice

Radial: Spammy at full taps just after take-off (goosebump stuff)
Turbine: any PT-6 as the starter is flicked, the blades spooling up then the ignitors going off, and the coup de grace, the moment when ignition takes place! (same for Jettie start as well)
Piston: C210T full taps during take-off roll!

Not much of a jet man, so no special ones there.

Re: What Are Your Favourite Aviation Sounds

Growing up in Valhalla, staying over at my German friend across the road from Swarries and hearing the Puma's start up at 5 o'clock on Saturday mornings for the ferry to SWA.

The sound of an Allison/Rolls Royce 250 coming to life has to be one of my favourites as well :

Re: What Are Your Favourite Aviation Sounds

I was thinking the other day, if there is a place where you can download cellphone ringtones like this.

Awesome thread!

Re: What Are Your Favourite Aviation Sounds

Nyathi - you gotta be there, record it on your cell, and then save it as a ringtone....

My late Uncle had a tape (audio) of Spitfires starting up and taking off for a mission during WW2. Something like 20 Spits starting up within 5 minutes - AWESOME.

A Herc - when you taxi in and the engineer pulls the Low Speed Ground Idle Buttons - that sudden change in engine noise.
A Fluffy - when the burners ignite the paraffin during the start cycle...

When the phone rings and the voice says

" Hello Mr. XXXXX, your forex has arrived, may we clear it for you?"
